Chronic Codeswitching: Shaping Black/White Multiracial Student Sense of Belonging

Multiracial students grapple with experiences around mixedness which can hinder their sense of belonging among different social groups. Constantly feeling unaccepted and receiving the comment “You are too Black” or White” capture some common microaggressions faced by Black/White multiracial students. Using a phenomenological design, this study examines ways in develop at predominantly White institution (PWI). While codeswitching has ability to impact racial ethnic minority groups, our findings suggest that tend rely on chronic as seeking acceptance, balancing “otherness” carefully minimizing exclusion when interacting members Chronic is particularly relevant an everyday strategy how foster community. Research practice implications included.
